In developing a Quality Management System, companies typically look for two clear goals; gaining ISO certification as easily and rapidly as possible and creating a ‘living’ system that is effectively used, and not just a set of folders on a shelf. For mobile phone manufacturer Sendo, the key to achieving both these aims was adopting the flowcharting software allCLEAR from Proquis.
A UK success story in the field of consumer electronics, Sendo, one of Europe's newest mobile phone manufacturers, has seen massive growth since it was founded in August 1999. The company distributes products to over fifty countries, but predominantly to network operators in Europe and the Americas.
With major developments in product range, technology alliances, its broadening global customer base, and distribution requirements, Sendo has seen all its business processes become increasingly complex in a short period. At the same time, its workforce has expanded in line with the growth of the company. Therefore, recognising the need to ensure the control of quality and risk in all its burgeoning activities, and the need to meet the requirements of its blue chip customer base, a recent and important logical step forward for the company has been the development and documentation of a fully fledged Quality Management System, and gaining ISO 9000: 2000 certification.
However, as Steve Shirley, Sendo’s Quality Systems Manager explains,
"Although there was obvious pressure to create the QMS and gain certification as rapidly and easily as possible, we were determined from the start that the exercise would not just be about satisfying the certification process. We wanted to avoid having a set of dust collecting manuals sitting on a shelf, and instead chose to create an effective and ‘living’ Quality Management System that would continually enable the company to not only maintain, but enhance procedures and policies, and ensure sound operation."
